PROFILE (BACKGROUND OF THE CHILD)

Peter comes from a family of seven. Peter, and his family, are victims of the 2007 post-election violence. Peter’s mother is a single parent, who is divorced, and Sarah’s father does not support the family in any way. Peter’s mother works on a farm as a casual laborer and earns 250 Kenyan shillings on a good day. Her employment, due to its agricultural nature, varies depending on the season. Peter’s eldest sibling was able to attend school until class 8 as they were supported by a “good Samaritan”. By similar means, Peter’s second and third born siblings attended school until class 7 and then became house-help and got married under-aged. Peter’s mother was unable to afford Peter’s education and approached Sure 24 to request support for Peter’s education. He is now enrolled at L.F.A. Peter’s mother is very grateful for the better opportunities Peter and his younger siblings have access to, as a result of the support of Sure24, compared to the experiences of Peter’s older siblings. Although Peter does not always receive an evening meal or breakfast, if his mother cannot afford it with the wages earned from being a casual laborer, his mother is very grateful that Sarah receives a nutritious meal at school. She says she feels happier when Peter is at school than at home as he is guaranteed a meal. Peter’s mother is working hard to provide appropriate uniform and is very grateful for the support she receives from Sure24. According to Sarah’s mother, “things are only getting better” and she hopes things continue in this way.
