PROFILE (BACKGROUND OF THE CHILD)

Mariet is the last born in a family of 8 children. She has 2 sisters and 5 brothers. She is a humble girl and likes reading storybooks so much and enjoys learning new words and their meaning. When she grows up she would like to be a chef, like her dad, and cook food for other people. Mariet comes from a very poor family and her father is an alcoholic. This means that he often was in temporary and precarious employment and often spent his wages on alcohol. He is now separated with Mariet’s mother and does not support the family at all. Mariet’s four oldest siblings never completed schooling. Mariet’s eldest brother reached the third level of high school but had to drop out due to a lack of fees. Mariet’s eldest sister had to drop out of primary education at class 5 and is now married. Mariet’s mother is in unstable casual employment, working on someone’s farm. She is only required to work for one to three days a week and earns 200-600 Kenyan shillings in a week, depending on the season. The children were approached by Sure24 Homes to attend Rainbow Club, the weekly feeding programme, and later Mariet and the younger siblings were enrolled in L.F.A.
